Artefact 58

Glazed pottery leaf

The original idea of the “artefact” series was to photograph and record items which were then disposed of. This has not happened – until now.

While dusting a display shelf I knocked something off which fell onto and broke the green and white glazed pottery leaf. It would have been a simple job to repair it but now, perhaps, was the time to start clearing out some of our objects.

Marg went to pottery classes, in the early eighties, and made a series of items which appear on shelves and window sills around the house. The pottery fish has doubled-up because the one gifted to her parents has ended up back in our house. An interesting detail of each is the underneath which is inscribed, in addition to her initials, the day of the week the evening class was held. This ensured the items were returned from the kiln to the correct group.

I really like the brown leaf, a simple, yet effective, representation. The lemon-squeezer is still in use. In fact, there are two.

OK, this has turned into a group of artefacts and from a relatively short period of adult education classes (remember them?) at Deal Secondary School. The tutor was Valerie Snow. Marg enjoyed being creative!

We should all have a bit of creativity in our lives for what we now call well-being. More recently we have dabbled with water-colours on cruise ships and found it challenging but quite fun.
