We went back to Tunisia.
\nLast year in Hammamet there was a hotel under construction next to ours and we saw it in the brochure, not quite believing the work would have been completed. On having a look the hotel was in very good shape. The landscaping hadn’t grown up, of course, but everything else looked in order for the rapidly exanding tourism along this coastline.

Matmata was one of the most unreal places we have ever been. Quite amazing. Living underground is quite sensible in such a hot place. We stayed overnight in one of these.

A lasting memory was the hot coach journey (no air-conditioning) passed millions of olive trees and across the sand and salt-pans of the Sahara. For hours on this straight road there was a single feature on the horizon: a Roman colosseum. It had no surrounding buildings and was in very good shape. It was amazing to think of this place as the grain bowl of the Roman Empire.
